The award honors Integrated Education and Training programs that combine career technical education, workforce preparation, and adult literacy to prepare students for employment while strengthening their communities.
Over the past year, BPACE faculty, staff, and administrators strengthened the adult literacy component by expanding instruction beyond vocabulary and reading comprehension to include writing, public speaking, workplace communication, and conflict resolution. The enhanced curriculum helps students develop both technical and professional skills that prepare them for long-term career success.
Earlier this year, BPACE shared its innovative instructional model during a statewide meeting, where the presentation received recognition from CASAS and led to the program being selected for the award.
A key factor in the recognition was BPACE's partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Through the collaboration, students have applied their technical training and workplace communication skills while volunteering on rebuilding projects in the Altadena wildfire area, supporting families affected by the devastating fires while gaining valuable hands-on experience.
"The Making a Difference Award reflects our commitment to preparing students not only for careers, but also for meaningful service in their communities," BPACE Director Dr. Veronica Valenzuela said.
BPACE continues to expand career technical education opportunities for adult learners, offering programs in fields including electrical, HVAC, roofing, automotive technology, barbering, cosmetology, culinary arts, pharmacy technician, personal care aide, medical assistant, and more.
